Behind the Guitars

Roy WillemsRoy Willems, born in 1977, already comes in contact with the guitar at a very young age. With the accompaniment of his uncle, together with the interaction between the two of them, has become clear that Roy has talent. Guitarist and teacher Bart Mooten is approached to further develop the talent of this young boy. This tutor plays an important part in his passion for the electric guitar. It turns out to be a valuable collaboration for his career as a guitarist in which he wins several awards, including ‘The Northern Guitars Awards’ twice.

In the year 2010 Roy is about to make his début with his current band Ivy’s Dream, which can be heard on MySpace. Meanwhile, the student grew into a tutor himself and shows his passion to other guitarists by giving guitar lessons.

Over the years he becomes increasingly fascinated in the technical aspects and elements of the guitar and starts with the construction of his first electric guitar. He’s making a ’62 Stratocaster Olympic White’ replica. Everything is hand-made, even the truss rod. During the construction and development of this guitar it becomes clear to him that he can give expression to his passion and creativity.

To broaden knowledge and expertise he approaches renowned guitar maker Jan Zonjee in Amersfoort for an intensive course of construction of an acoustic guitar. The combination of the two visions contributed to the development of Roy’s own style. With his first guitar model he quickly reaches a number of guitarists for which he builds guitars that meet their specific needs. The line of these guitars is named: ‘Overtone Series’ and can be seen on the website under the button: ‘Custom Guitars’.

In 2008, Roy decides to exchange his regular job for a professional career as an independent guitar maker and starts an establishment in the capital city of Drenthe, Assen. Besides the construction of his own guitar line, Roy is also working on the modification and restoration of all possible kinds of electric guitars.
